Listed as Albert Charles in IGI

The confusion over William's brother and his family has been a headache for me for some time. Albert Charles Walsby was the name witten in the baptism register of St Matthew Bethnal Green on 28 Nov 1849 (born 07 Nov 1849), but he was registered as Herbert Charles (maybe the church clerk misheard or misread his notes when he came to write-up the entries). The 1881 census shows him as John Walsby, the 1891 census as Herbert Walsby. The 1901 census entry is a real mess : the enumerator clearly wrote down only the initals - possibly this was all he was told - and later guessed at the possible names, which he got mostly wrong : Charlotte is Caroline, Emily is Ellen, Richard is Robert, and Harry is Herbert ! Another son, Charles, married in 1898 and his father's name is given as John Charles ; when Ellen married in 1902 she gave her father's name as Herbert John Charles, and when the son Herbert married in 1904 the father's name was given as Herbert John. I wonder what the 1911 census has in store for us. When the father died in 1918, his death was registered as Herbert J. [M Walsby 31 May 2005]
